After introducing the long-awaited ability to seamlessly use the same account across one phone and many other devices in 2021, WhatsApp is back today with the logical conclusion to that effort. The service now offers what has to be the most requested feature of all.
You can use the same WhatsApp account on up to five phones. You link each additional phone the same way you link with WhatsApp on web browsers, tablets, and desktop devices. Each phone connected to WhatsApp communicates independently, ensuring that your messages, media, and calls remain end-to-end encrypted.
Furthermore, if your primary phone has been inactive for “a long time” (the company didn’t specify anything more precise), you’ll be logged out of all companion devices automatically, as a security precaution.
So now you can finally switch between multiple phones without logging out of WhatsApp. You can use multiple phones with the same WhatsApp account logged in on all of them. Come on forward!
This update has already started rolling out to all users globally. The offering will conclude “in the coming weeks.”
Additionally, WhatsApp is rolling out (over the same coming weeks) an “accessible method” for linking to companion devices. You will be able to enter your phone number on WhatsApp Web to then receive a one-time code, which you can use on your phone to enable device linking, rather than having to scan a QR code. This is only being rolled out to WhatsApp Web for now, but it promises to come to “more companion devices in the future.”
