Opera today unveiled its new Opera One browser, which is set to replace the company’s current flagship desktop browser later this year. Opera One brings with it quite a few changes, including an updated user interface, integration with AI chatbots, and tab management features.
Opera One has an updated design, which features more rounded shapes for user interface elements, such as tabs, the address bar, and the sidebar. However, this is not a complete redesign, as much of the user interface and especially the design and layout of the menus are identical to the current version of the browser.
Opera claims that Opera One is the first major browser based on Chromium to implement a multithreaded component. This improves the performance of UI animations, which the new browser has quite a few.
The other new feature in Opera One is something Opera calls Tab Islands. This is a tab management feature found in some other browsers that allows you to create groups of tabs. These groups can be opened or minimized to save space and categorize your open sites. Tab islands can be set to automatically create groups any time you open a link from the current site in a new tab or they can be created manually by dragging the tabs around. Groups can be saved or closed together.
Finally, Opera has also integrated ChatGPT and ChatSonic into a sidebar feature that lets you open both services in a small window to the side. There is also a built-in AI prompts feature that provides suggestions to shorten the article, highlight the point, compose a tweet, create a meme idea, etc. around the content of the current page using one of the above services and these options change based on the page.
Regardless, Opera One in its current form is not a huge departure from the current Opera browser. Admittedly, it’s a bit of a buzzword salad, with things like AI and modules thrown in for good measure (Opera was also one of the first to jump on the coder hype train). The browser is currently in Early Access and will replace the standard Opera for Windows, macOS, and Linux later this year.
