Honda said today that it plans to launch its first architecture-based electric vehicle in North America in 2025.
This was a year before the Japanese automaker originally announced that it would offer vehicles based on its in-car platform, which focuses more on software and over-the-air updates similar to Tesla.
Honda said in a statement that the 2025 car will feature a new internal operating system, which will enable “continuous advancement of vehicle functions and services to customers even after the vehicle has been purchased.”
Recently in the North American electric vehicle race, Honda has so far leaned on General Motors to get its electric vehicles out the door, by building on the Detroit automaker’s Ultium architecture and EV platform. The electric vehicles Honda has developed with General Motors — the Prologue and Acura ZDX — are slated for North American release in 2024.
Honda said the first vehicle based on the architecture will be a “mid-to-large EV model,” disappointing the precious few of us here in North America who prefer small cars. TechCrunch reached out to Honda to ask if it plans to introduce smaller electrics in the US.
