An Instacart delivery driver and his girlfriend have been shot while trying to deliver groceries in South Florida. According to police reports, Walds Thomas Jr., 19, and his girlfriend, Diamond Darvill, 18, pulled into the wrong lane while trying to find a client’s address.
Thomas told authorities he was on the phone with an Instacart customer when he accidentally walked into the property of 43-year-old Antonio Cacavall. According to the police report, Cacaval approached Thomas’ car and the two exchanged words before he shot at the car. The groceries were intended for Cacaval’s neighbor, who told police he saw Thomas walking into the neighbor’s driveway and “driving erratically trying” to get out.
Cacaval told the police that his son approached the car first and asked for help, and at that time he ran towards the car, saying he feared for his and his son’s safety, according to the police report. When he approached Thomas’ car, Cacavelli said he began driving “erratically” and allegedly ran over his foot when he fired several shots into the car. When the police arrive at the scene, they find Thomas and Darvill parked nearby with a flat tire and two holes in the bumper of the car.
Kakaval’s neighbor told police the delivery was intended for his home and his wife was on the phone with Thomas when they saw him walking down Kakaval’s driveway and heard three gunshots before the car exited the property, according to the police report.
The Davie Police Department declined to comment on the investigation, but according to the report, the investigation was closed as there was no evidence proving “that any criminal act was committed by either party.” The report continues, “Each party appears justified in its actions based on the circumstances of which it has become aware.”
When asked about how Instacart supports Thomas, the company said in an emailed statement to Gizmodo, “The safety of the entire Instacart community is extremely important to us, and we take immediate action when we receive reports of violence or threats of violence against any member of the Instacart community.
